What I'm reading, watching, and playing
Toto, by A.J. Hackwith: I had the privilege of reading an early copy of A.J. Hackwith's new book, which takes on the Wizard of Oz from Toto's point of view. Being a good dog nearly got him sold out to animal control, so maybe it's time to try... being... a bad dog? It's a snarky, witty, modernized, thoroughly delightful take on the familiar story, and you should absolutely go grab it on pre-order now.
Extraordinary: A superhero sitcom with surprising heart, this is a world where everyone gets a superpower when they turn 18, maybe a cool one like flying, maybe a useful one like rewinding time, or maybe something annoying like summoning fish--except for poor Jen, who has no power at all, and is on a
mission to get one. We've just finished the first season of this show, which is on Hulu, and it's great fun.
Talos Principle 2: A few months ago, a sequel was released to one of my favorite puzzle games, and it's even better than the first one. A colony of sentient robots are trying to find their way forward in the world without making the mistakes that led humanity to their downfall. The puzzles are varied and
interesting, the robot characters are pure delight, and the story actually made me think deeply about philosophy in a way that's rare in a game. I don't think you need to play the first game to enjoy the sequel.
